Cautions and Interactions
The current upper limit for vitamin D is 2000 IU daily, though recent safety reviews have suggested a five-fold increase is warranted. Supplemental vitamin D should be used cautiously in those on digoxin or any cardiac glycoside or suffering from hypercalcemia. Drugs that may interact with vitamin D include bile sequestrants, ketoconazole and related drugs, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and antacids with aluminum. Pregnant/nursing women should consult a physician before use. Side effects are rare in healthy adults with intakes below 2,400 IU daily.
;Vitamin D enhances the uptake of calcium from the diet, is necessary for bone and dental health, regulates immune activity and supports healthy cell division. Recent research indicates that Vitamin D also may play an important role in supporting cardiovascular health.
Vitamin D is normally produced in the skin as a result of exposure to uv light from the sun. However, the use of sunscreens, aging, avoidance of sun exposure, and living in the Northern latitudes can significantly reduce vitamin D production by the body. Vitamin D can also be obtained through the diet and some sources include fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products.
The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. By promoting calcium absorption, vitamin D helps to form and maintain strong bones. Vitamin D also works in concert with a number of other vitamins, minerals, and hormones to promote bone mineralization. In addition, Vitamin D plays an important role in immune function, and helps to regulate cell gth and differentiation.
